Event manager with passion

Andreas Gelf connects university student groups – and at the specialist forum, he brings together experts and interested participants on the topic of the energy transition.

Andreas Gelf never imagined that, as an electrical engineer, he would one day become a project manager. The 25-year-old is in the second semester of his master’s program with a focus on energy engineering – and invests much of his own energy in his involvement with VDE. He serves on the board of the student group at RPTU and in the Kurpfalz regional association, where he primarily supports university groups and their networking.

Last year, Andreas Gelf took the lead in organizing the VDE Energy Forum for the first time. “I had a lot of respect for it because I had never done anything of that kind or scale before.” However, he did not have to jump into the deep end alone. Dr. Kevin Rick, Head of the VDE Southwest Region, served as his mentor and handled the basics such as booking the venue and catering. “That was invaluable,” Gelf says, while he himself coordinated the overall content planning – recruiting experts for technical presentations, preparing the location, and promoting the event. To ensure that “The Kurpfalz path in the energy transition,” the successor to the established Hydrogen Forum, would be a success, Gelf was not only busy with preparations beforehand but also served as the main contact and moderator on the evening itself. “I had serious stage fright,” he admits. “In hindsight, it wasn’t really necessary – I put all that pressure on myself.” At the same time, he felt responsible for making the evening successful for everyone. “That’s probably the passion everyone talks about.”

VDE Energy Forum 2025: discussing the energy transition together.

| Tobias Dorstert

It is no easy task to inspire speakers, VDE members, and other guests alike. “Our goal is to offer an event of the highest technical quality,” he explains. At the same time, they want to reach all interested participants. “If you’re an expert yourself, there’s a risk of becoming too technical.” Keeping the target audience in mind, learning to estimate appropriate presentation lengths, and reliably briefing speakers proved to be a balancing act that required considerable time and effort – only to realize that “the heart of the event is actually something else.” What ultimately stood out most were the conversations during the reception after the talks. “We stood together late into the evening, much longer than planned. Old acquaintances reconnected and new contacts were made. That’s really what the VDE Energy Forum is about.”

Despite this positive conclusion, Andreas Gelf is determined to improve the organization in the future. Even though attendance was strong, he believes there was potential to reach many more people. He therefore plans to intensify marketing efforts, start earlier, and attract more guests who are not yet VDE members. At the same time, he will continue to rely on his personal connections and wholehearted commitment: “Meeting many different people and the feeling of doing something good and important for others and for electrical engineering means a great deal to me.” Not least, he also benefits personally from his volunteer work: “It helps me stay grounded in reality and not get lost in the theoretical side of my studies.”
