Sophie Gastinger no longer needs to be convinced of the advantages of technical professions. The 17-year-old already knows that she wants to start a technical degree after she graduates from high school next year. That suits me, because having “a varied career is important to me. I want to work on innovative technologies and make a difference. The most important thing for me is that my career is meaningful – although I would of course also like a good salary.” She knows VDE from her participation in the INVENT a CHIP 2023 microchip competition. And she was motivated to take part in this event by her physics teacher, who encouraged her to use her talent for science. “I’m very grateful to him for that,” says Sophie. “I didn’t have that field on my radar for my future before.” This experience has made her realize what a big role teachers also play in school students’ career choices and that they can do a lot to get more young people interested in technical careers. Sophie even contributed her own article on her point of view to the young talent edition of VDE dialog – and hopes that her appeal will be well received. “It would be really great if the issue could raise awareness in schools.”
