Smart Home – Our connected house
The "House of Tomorrow" was presented 90 years ago. The 1933/34 World's Fair in Chicago showed the astonished public how they would live tomorrow. Electric light with adjustable dimming function, the first dishwasher from General Electric, an "iceless" refrigerator and a garage door that opened and closed at the touch of a button were just some of the innovations that the house offered.
A lot has happened since then. Smart homes offer solutions for comfort, security, energy efficiency and entertainment. Whether you want to control your radiators automatically, regulate the lighting when you are out and about or keep an eye on your driveway, there is a smart home device for almost every application. There is no shortage of new technical developments.
In this issue of VDE dialog, we present innovations and get to the bottom of the question of what smart buildings can contribute to climate protection. We take a look at the world of film - where the smart home is also a popular topic.
In addition to the main topic of smart homes, we will also be looking at a topic from science and research. In real laboratories, new developments and product ideas are tested in the real world instead of behind closed doors. The aim is to mature them more quickly and bring them to market. The idea is not new, but it is gaining momentum!
We also spoke to Wolfgang Niedziella, member of the DKE Executive Board and President of the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization CENELEC, about the ruling of the European Court of Justice in the case known as the "Malamud case" and what consequences this could have for European standardization.
Last but not least, we are asking you, dear readers, for your opinion. In an online survey, you can vote on our drafts for a refreshed VDE dialog. You can find the survey at dialog.vde.com/poll-dialog
